Alkanet Root
Alkana tinctoria
(Dyer's Bugloss, Anchusa tinctoria)

Medicinal Usage

In an ointment, alkanet was used externally to help support wounds, skin irritations, rashes, burns and bed-sores. Culpeper said that, made into a vinegar, it "helps yellow jaundice, spleen, and gravel in the kidneys."

Culinary Usage

The flowers and young leaves of alkanet were eaten raw in salads or cooked like spinach.

Miscellaneous

In the Middle Ages alkanet was mainly grown for its root, from which was extracted a reddish dye. Powdered, it was also used cosmetically as a rouge. Harvey claimed that there is no evidence for the plant being cultivated in England before the late sixteenth century.

Alkanet Root is cultivated in Central and Southern Europe for its dye, which is readily extracted by oils. It is used to give a red color to salves, etc., and in staining wood in imitation of rosewood, or mahogany. This is done by rubbing it with oil in which the Alkanet root has been soaked. About 8 to 10 tons were annually imported from France and Germany.

The species are hispid or pubescent herbs, with oblong, entire leaves, and bracteated racemes, rolled up before the flowers expand. The corolla is rather small, between funnel and salver-shaped; usually purplish-blue, but in some species yellow or whitish; the calyx enlarges in fruit. The root, which is often very large in proportion to the size of the plant, yields in many of the species a red dye from the rind.

Health-wise, Alkanet Root can be used to help with irritations, inflammation, jaundice, ailments involving the spleen, gravel in the kidneys, back pain and fevers. Externally, Alkanet Root helps to mend burns, wounds and bruising.

General Herb Information

Bugloss - Four interesting plants of the Borage family, with characteristic hairy leaves and stems and with flowers that are rose colored at first and later turn a beautiful light or purplish blue are Dyer's Bugloss or real alkanet (Alkanna tinctoria); Common Alkanet (Anchusa ofticinalis) which is not real alkanet; Italian Bugloss (Anchusa azurea) variety Dropmore; Viper's Bugloss or Blue-weed (Echium vulgare).

Dyer's Bugloss is much cultivated in southern Europe, flowers are purplish blue, the root very large in proportion to the rest of the plant, height of plant 20 inches.

Viper's Bugloss, an erect bristly plant, 2 1/2 feet tall, found on road-sides, in meadows and dry, waste places, stems and leaves sometimes spotted red, flowers a vivid blue, grows best in chalky, gravelly soil. In rich soil plant grows coarse, flowers scanty and not so colorful.

Spacing of Mature Plants: From 12 to 18 inches.
