• Traditionally used to help support menstrual disorders, lung problems, indigestion and more.
Oregano Leaf, also known as Wild Marjoram, Mountain Mint, Spanish Thyme, and Origanum, is an aromatic Mediterranean herb with a long history as a food additive and a as a useful plant. Oregano is a member of the Labiatae family, which includes Sage, Marjoram, Thyme, Hyssop, Basil, and Lavender. Oregano is most associated with pizza and other Italian cuisine. Oregano Leaf can also be used in Greek cooking for centuries. It has been tried for health benefits for at least as long as it has been used in cooking.

The Ancient Greeks used Oregano Leaf to help support dropsy, convulsions, poisoning, coughs, asthma, indigestion, and headache. Oregano was also used to help avoid seasickness, to help support swelling, and as a hair restorative. Oregano Leaf is still used as an expectorant and as a digestive aid. Oregano Leaf may also help to reduce bloating. It can also be used in supporting menstrual problems.

Recent research has focused on Oregano Leaf's promise as an antioxidant, and disinfectant. Oregano Leaf also contains gallic acid, carvacrol, and tannic acid, which aids in rejuvenating and has astringent properties.

Oregano, sweet marjoram and dittany are mainly used to help support coughs, catarrh, cough and cold, colic and dyspepsia. These herbs or their dilute oils are sometimes used topically for mouth hygiene, to help support nasal congestion, wounds and itching skin. The essential oils of oregano and marjoram are used in aromatherapy.

Oregano
Origanum vulgare L.

Family: Lamiaceae.

Other Names: Origan (French); Echter Dost (German); origana (Italian); orégano (Spanish).

Description: Oregano is an aromatic perennial herb up to 0.9 m) with hairy, opposite leaves and white or pink flowers congested towards the branch ends. It is very similar to marjoram or sweet marjoram (O. majorana) and the two species (both popular culinary herbs) are then confused. Several species have been used in folk tradition, including O. compactum, O. dictamnus, O. heracleoticum, O. onites and O. syriacum. O. syriacum is the hyssop of the Bible (mentioned at the Crucifixion). O. dictamnus, the dittany of Crete (or dictamon in Greek), has woolly leaves and large floral bracts. In Greek mythology, it is the herb that was used by Aphrodite to mend the wounds of the trojan hero Aeneas.

Origin: Europe to central Asia (O. vulgare), Mediterranean region (O. majorana), Middle East (O. syriacum) and Crete (O. dictamnus). Oregano, and to a lesser extent marjoram, are commercially grown as spices (oregano gives the characteristic flavour to pizza). Ditany and related species have been developed as an ornamental garden plants. The herb is still popular in Greece and especially in Crete, where it is said to be endemic.

Parts Used: Dried aboveground parts (oregano - Origani vulgaris herba; marjoram herb - Majoranae herba); essential oil (oregano oil - Origani vulgaris aetheroleurn and marjoram oil - Majoranae aetheroleum).

Therapeutic Category: Stomachic, expectorant.

Preparation and Dosage: Tea made from 1 - 2 g of dried herb can be taken three times a day. The oil should never be taken internally.

Active Ingredients: Oregano and dittany oil contains carvacrol (40-70%), p-cymene and gamma-terpinen, while marjoram oil mainly has terpinen-4-ol, alpha-terpineol, sabinen, linalool and carvacrol.

Health Effects: The essential oils of Origanum species interfere with biomembranes and are considered to be disinfectant, spasmolytic and anti-inflammatory.

Status: Traditional health; Pharm.; Comm. E+.

Origans are regarded as stimulants, stomachics, expectorants, sudorifics and even emmenagogues; they have been used in general debility, amenorrhea and visceral congestions. But, they can be used to help support asthma, chronic catarrh, rheumatic pains and stiff necks.

According to Murray, a few handfuls of Origan left in the barrels will stop the beer going off. It is used in a vulnerary water, compound mugwort syrup and a sternutatory powder. Since antiquity, it has been regarded as a wonderful vulnerary; it has often been boasted of by the poets. Virgil said that his hero Aeneas was helped by the unseen care of Venus, his mother, with the help of this plant.

Medicinal Usage

Stimulant, carminative, diaphoretic, nervine, and emmenagogic properties have been attributed to oregano. It has been used in indigestion, headaches, nervous tension, insect bites, toothaches, and coughs.

The oil contains carvacrol and thymol as the primary components. These two phenols may constitute as much as 90 percent of the oil. They possess disinfectant properties.

Oregano contains vitamin A, niacin, phosporus, potassium calcium, iron and traces of zinc.

Oregano more properly refers to a flavor rather than one particular plant. 0. heracleoticum is commercially cultivated and sold as oregano along with 0. vulgare and 0. onites. Lippia graveolens of the verbena family is grown in Mexico and sold as Mexican oregano. Other plants producing "oregano" include members of the genera Coleus, Salvia, Satureja, Thymus, Monarda, Hedeoma, Calamintha, and Lantana. In essence, plants containing high percentages of the phenols carvacrol and lesser amounts of thymol in their essential oils have an "oregano" flavor and aroma.

General Herb Information

The genus Origanum contains about twenty species, five of which are commonly grown in-herb gardens. In the mint family, this genus is characterized by tight cylindrical heads of sessile flowers called spikelets or spicules. Leaf-like bracts cover the flowers just as shingles overlap on a roof. The oreganos are dwarf shrubs or annual, biennial, or perennial herbs native to the Mediterranean region and central Asia.

0. vulgare L., oregano or wild marjoram, is a hairy perennial growing to 2 1/2 feet tall, often branching at the top. The leaves are opposite, oval, entire or toothed, and up to 1 1/2 inches long. The flower heads are in a panicle or corymb, each spikelet being up to 11/8 inches long. The bracts are purple. Each calyx has five equal-sized teeth. The flowers are white-purple and about one-fourth inch long. Flowering begins in late July and lasts into September. The species has many variants. 0. vulgare 'Aureum' has yellow leaves, 0. vulgare 'Viride' has green bracts and white flowers.

0. heracleoticum L. native to southeast Europe, resembles 0. vulgare, and in fact, was once classified as one of its varieties. It too has five equal teeth on the calyces. The bracts are usually one-eighth inch long, are densely covered with oil glands on the lower surface, and are green or purple (rare). Flowers are white, or infrequently pink.

0. onites L., pot marjoram, is a hairy perennial growing to two feet in height. The leaves are oval or rounded, one-fourth to three-fourths inch long, sessile, and sparsely toothed. The flowers are in a dense terminal corymb up to three inches across. Each spikelet is about three-fourths inch long. The bracts are pointed and about one-eighth inch long. The one-fourth inch flowers are white, sometimes purple. It is a tender plant and not cultivated as widely as other species. It is a close relative of sweet marjoram, both having calyces rounded at the top with a deep slit down one side. Pot marjoram is a Mediterranean native.

0. dictamnus L., dittany of Crete, is the genus's most distinctive looking plant. It is a tender perennial growing to a foot in height, with opposite, rounded or oval, white woolly leaves. The loose panicles of three-eighths inch long bracts have a hop-like appearance. Flowers are pink and about one-half inch long. It blooms in the summer or autumn and hails from the isle of Crete.

You can propagate oreganos from seeds, stem cuttings, or root divisions, but seeds are sometimes slow to germinate. Both dittany of Crete and pot marjoram are not hardy in cold climates and must be started anew each year. It is best to propagate oreganos asexually, as seed grown plants may not be true to flavor or completely flavorless. When buying plants, stroke the leaves and make sure the plant has some fragrance.

Oreganos like a light, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil with full sun. In a rich, moist soil, their aroma and flavor is weak. Harvest as plants begin to bloom.

The post-war baby boom generation was the first group of s to grow up with oregano. After World War II, G.I.s who had tasted oregano-rich pizza in Italy made it popular in the United States. Oregano is good with tomato dishes, meats, omelettes, beans, and deviled eggs, and has a special affinity with basil.

Oregano is a very close relative of marjoram, so much so there is some confusion in the cross-pollination of their names. This is the pungently aromatic herb of southern Italy, the one that is used, mainly in its dried form, to flavor pizzas and tomato sauces. Indeed, Greek cooks are convinced that oregano - origani - is best used dried.

History

The plant originates from the Mediterranean region, where its pungency is in direct proportion with its quota of sun. It is a traditional ingredient of Mexican chili powder, and has long been used as a flavoring for chili sauces and chili beans.

Characteristics

This hardy annual grows to a height of about 8 inches, with woody stems and dark green leaves around ¾ inch long. The flowers, borne on long spikes, are small and white in color.

Growing Tips

The plant demands a well-drained soil in full sun, though a poor, stony soil will be adequate. Plant seed in warm soil in late spring, or in mid-spring, in pots or seed trays under glass. Oregano does especially well in indoor mini-propagators placed on the windowsill.

How to Use

The fresh leaves, which are sold in bundles in Italian and Greek markets, are useful additions to salads, soups, sauces, pâtés, and poultry dishes. Dried oregano is especially good with tomatoes, beans, eggplant, zucchini, and rice, and in dishes such as pilaf and risotto.

The leaves and flowers may be used in much the same way as sweet marjoram but are far less aromatic. The essential oil is hotter and spicy but it is very antiseptic and can be used to advantage in soaps and medicated bath oils.

Health-wise,wild marjoram can be used to help support a variety of health problems such as coughs and chest infections and colic and indigestion.
