• Traditionally used to help support healthy function
Yohimbe is also known by the name Johimbe. This plant is native to tropical West Africa, and was frequently used by the Bantu people. The part of this plant used for health benefits is the bark. Yohimbe Bark has a long folk history of helping support healthy levels of energy and desire.

Historically, Yohimbe Bark was used in western Africa for support of fevers and coughs. It can also be used to dilate pupils, for support of a healthy heart, and as a local anesthetic. It has a more recent history of use as an aphrodisiac, and as a hallucinogen. Currently, Yohimbe is the only natural product with enough credible evidence to be listed as a sensual stimulant and intimacy booster in The Physician's Desk Reference.

The primary chemical constituents of Yohimbe Bark include indole alkaloid (yohimbine, yohimbiline, ajmaline, pseudoyohimbine), and tannins. Yohimbe Bark supports both the male and female reproductive, nervous, circulatory and respiratory systems. It contains an alkaloid yohimbine, which expands the blood vessels in the extremities of the body, including the genitals, skin, and fat cells. This compound has now been isolated. Yohimbine may act as an alpha adreno-receptor blocker, reducing the effect of hormones that cause constriction of blood vessels, which typically increases as we age. Yohimbe Bark may aid blood flow to the corpus cavernosom to more readily engorge the penis. This herb may help increase the body's production of norepinephrine which is essential to the formation of erections, and may support healthy levels of adrenaline to nerve endings which enhances intimate stimulation. Thousands of Urologists in the U.S. and abroad have been recommending Yohimbe for years.

Many studies have shown that Yohimbe Bark can help support poor blood circulation (i.e. age, high blood sugar levels, emotional problems, etc.). A recent clinical study in Rhode Island (published in the Journal of Urology) tested the active ingredient yohimbine on a group of men who had experienced chronic dysfunction - for those who had been impotent for less than two years, the improvement rate was an astounding 81% as a direct result of consuming a moderate dosage over a period of one month. Yohimbe Bark has also be tried as an herb for weight loss, though there are more effective herbs one can choose for this purpose. Topical applications of this herb may include its use as a poultice for pain support. The species Pausinystalia yohimbe was formerly named Coryanthe yohimbe.

Name

Pausinystalia yohimbe (K. Shumann) Pierre ex Beille and also sometimes Corynanthe yohimbi Schumann (Rubiaceae), commonly called yohimbine, yohimbe bark and yohimbehe cortex. Prescription drugs containing yohimbine include Aphrodyne™, Dayto Himbin™, Prohim™, Yocon™, Yohimex™, and Yovital™. In German, it is Yohimberinde.

Source

The dried bark of the trunk and branches of Pausinystalia yohimbe Pierre ex Beille, a tree native to west Africa. Smaller amounts can be extracted from the roots of Rauwolfia serpentina L. Benth (Apocynaceae), better known as the source of the antihypertensive drug reserpine.

History

Shavings of the inner bark, boiled in water for half an hour, have traditionally been used as an aphrodisiac. In modern times, yohimbine can be used to help support male dysfunction.

Traditional Support Uses

Yohimbine can be used as an aphrodisiac.

Commission E Recommendations

Yohimbine is not on the list of approved herbs. It can be used as an aphrodisiac.

Possible Effects

Yohimbine rapidly enters the brain and stimulates the brain centers controlling blood pressure and heart rate. Yohimbine is classified as an alpha-2-adrenergic antagonist. Drugs in this group decrease sympathetic nervous system activity and increase the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system. One consequence of these actions is increased blood flow to the penis and rejuvenate healthy performance. Another consequence is dilated pupils.

In addition to the effects on penile blood flow, yohimbine has other actions that may also improve male performance. Its structure closely resembles the structure of the neurotransmitter serotonin, and those of hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD, psilocin, and DMT.

Users of yohimbine sometimes report nervousness and anxiety, so it is safe to assume that the drug causes some sort of central nervous system stimulation, and perhaps even arousal.

Yohimbine's effects on the brain are the object of considerable interest in Europe, where two closely related chemical derivatives of yohimbine (almitrine and raubasine) are being used as an experimental product for heart health issues.

Yohimbe bark affects the kidneys and adrenals while stimulating the production of progesterone and exhibit ing aphrodisiac properties. These actions are believed to be due to the presence of yohimbine in the form of an alkaloid salt and yohimbine hydrochloride. The herb is often recommended to address frigidity.

A native of Africa, where it has been used in tribal marriage rituals, yohimbine is probably the strongest purely herbal aphrodisiac effective for both men and women. Yohimbine from the herb is one of the only recognized medical drug aphrodisiacs. It dilates the blood vessels of the skin and mucous membranes, which causes the blood to rise closer to the surface of the sex organs. Because yohimbe increases pelvic circulation and stimulates erections, one should be careful to not aggravate prior irritation of the kidneys, colon, or prostate. It is very stimulating but at the same time, it lowers blood pressure. One wonders why, therefore, there are traditional precautions against its use for individuals with preexisting high blood pressure.

Dosage

Never exceed the recommended dose of 1 or 2 capsules daily with food. One can take it as an aphrodisiac, 1-2 hours before making love.

The recommended dose for Yocon® and other prescription-only yohimbine formulations is one 5.4 milligram tablet three times a day. Herbal food supplements containing powdered yohimbine may be standardized to contain whatever yohimbine content the manufacturer thinks is desirable. Some of the supplements may contain twice the amount found in the prescription formulations.

Yohimbe bark extracts are traditional stimulants and male tonics in tropical Africa. In modern phytomedicine it can be used to regulate micturition and has become extremely popular for helping support frigidity. Beneficial effects against hypertension and fatigue have been reported.

Yohimbe Tree
Pausinystalia johimbe (K. Schum.) Beille (= Corynanthe yohimbe = K. Schum.).

Family: Rubiaceae.

Other Names: Yohimbe (French); Yohimbebaum (German); yohimbe (Italian).

Description: Yohimbe is a large forest tree of up to 30 m in height bearing narrowly oblong, bright green simple leaves and small, tubular, white or yellowish flowers, The fruits are small capsules containing winged seeds.

Origin: West and Central Africa (Cameroon to Congo). The tree is not yet cultivated commercially to any extent, and concern has been expressed about the conservation status of the species.

Parts Used: Bark, harvested from the stem or smaller branches of the tree (Yohimbe cortex).

Therapeutic Category: Aphrodisiac, urological.

Preparation and Dosage: The average and maximum daily doses of bark is 3 g and 10 g respectively. The safe and potentially effective dose of yohimbine in stimulant preparations and tonics is said to be less than 10 mg. Higher doses of 50 - 100 mg are hallucinogenic; more than 100 mg are considered unpleasant and dangerous.

Active Ingredients: The bark contains several monoterpene indole alkaloids of the yohimbine type (3-6%), of which (+)-yohimbine is the main compound.

Health Effects: The alkaloid yohimbine inhibits alpha-adrenergic receptors; they thus affect the sympathetic nervous system, leading to vasodilation and a decreased blood pressure. Yohimbine is a central stimulant and can enhance general anxiety and excitability of the lower abdomen. As a result, the use in urinary incontinence (weak bladder) is plausibly explained. Yohimbine was shown to increase copulation frequency in rats and a double blinded study with humans gave positive results in supporting healthy performance.

Status: Traditional health; modern health: yohimbine: Pharm.; clinical studies+.

According to a very recent study published in the Journal of Urology, "The benefit of yohimbine medication for healthy performance seems to outweigh its risks. Therefore, yohimbine is believed to be a reasonable therapeutic option for healthy performance that should be considered as initial scientific intervention." Just be careful about urine-screening tests, and remember that patients with high blood pressure or heart health issues should not be taking these products, nor should yohimbine be taken at the same time as other mood-altering agents.

St. John's Wort is the world's best known herbal alternative for promoting a positive mental attitude. St. John's Wort contains unique dietary ingredients including a compound known as hypericin, which researchers believe may be responsible for it's exciting, smile-inducing benefits.

The name Saint John's Wort is said to be in honor of the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem who used this herb to help support battlefield wounds. Because the hypericin content produces a bright red hue, the herb is often associated with blood, and is often collected on June 24th, the feast day of John the Baptist (the date he was beheaded). In the early 1900's, a beetle was introduced into the Pacific Northwest to keep this plant under control. Unfortunately, the effects of that action are greatly felt today, since the usefulness of this plant has led to great popularity.

The major constituents in St. John's Wort include hypericin and other dianthrones, flavonoids, xanthones, and hyperforin. While it was previously thought the anti-melancholy actions of St. John's Wort were due to hypericin and the inhibition of the enzyme monoamine oxidase, current research has challenged this belief, focusing on other constituents, such as hyperforin, and flavonoids. Test tube studies suggest that St. John's Wort extracts may exert their anti-melancholy actions by inhibiting the reuptake of the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. This action is possibly due to the constituent hyperforin. St. John's Wort is able to act as an anti-melancholy, by making more of these neurotransmitters available to the brain. It may take a couple of months of use before one experiences the full benefits of the herb's anti-melancholy properties.

Yohimbe is a tall evergreen forest tree native to southwestern Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, and the Congo. The bark of this African tree is used for health benefits. There are concerns, however, that the tree may be endangered due to over-harvesting for use for health.

Historically, yohimbe bark was used in western Africa for fevers, and coughs. It can also be tried to dilate pupils, for support of a healthy heart, and as a local anesthetic. It has a more recent history of use as an aphrodisiac and a hallucinogen.

The alkaloid known as yohimbine is the primary active constituent in yohimbe, although similar alkaloids may also play a role. Yohimbine blocks alpha-2 adrenergic receptors, part of the sympathetic nervous system. It also dilates blood vessels. Yohimbine inhibits monoamine oxidase (MAO) and therefore may theoretically be of benefit in melancholy disorders.

Pumpkins and other squashes are native to North and Central America, but have since been cultivated around the world. The seeds are primarily used in herbal health. The yellow blossoms of pumpkins are also used for health in some native traditions.

Native s used pumpkin flesh and seeds for food. Their use of the seeds for the potential to help support symptoms of intestinal concerns eventually led the United States Pharmacopoeia to list pumpkin seeds as an official supportive for bloating from 1863 to 1936. Natives also commonly used pumpkin seeds to help support a variety of kidney problems. The flowers were used topically to soothe minor injuries.

Pumpkin Seeds contain iron, B vitamins, and trace minerals. Pumpkin is also a natural source of magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, zinc, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Pumpkin seeds contain several major groups of active constituents: essential fatty acids, amino acids, phytosterols (e.g. beta-sitosterol) minerals, and vitamins. Other major constituents include mucilaginous carbohydrates and minerals. Due to the purported L-tryptophan content of pumpkin seeds, they have been suggested to help support melancholy.
