• Can be useful for helping support menstrual problems, urinary tract healths, appetite loss, kidney and bladder stones, digestive disorders and much more.
Juniper Leaf is a diuretic which can be used to help support menstruation problems and urinary tract healths. It can also be tried to help support appetite loss, kidney and bladder stones and urinary tract health concerns.

Juniper Berry can also be tried to help support indigestion and digestive disorders such as belching, heartburn, and bloating, and menstrual problems and blood sugar level concerns. Its effectiveness for these complaints has not, however, been verified.

This familiar household seasoning has a significant diuretic effect, flushing excess water from the body. It's this ability to increase the flow of urine that makes Juniper a useful aid in the support of urinary infections and kidney stones. The berries' diuretic action also tends to help support healthy blood pressure levels, although not sufficiently to warrant therapeutic use.

Numerous varieties of Juniper are found throughout most of the northern hemisphere, growing from 6 to 30 feet in height. The ripe blue berries have a tangy aroma and a tangy-sweet, then bitter taste. Oil extracted from Juniper berries is the main flavoring agent in gin; in Sweden it is used in beer.

The sweet and spicy berries of the juniper are diuretic, carminative, antiseptic, and stimulant. Juniper berries contain a volatile oil, various sugars, resin, and vitamin C. They have been historically tried to help support urinary problems, joint pain, rheumatic complaints, and flatulence. The systems of the body that are affected by juniper berries are the kidneys and the stomach.

Juniper berries are pnmarily used for the potential to help support symptoms of urinary problems, including urine retention, stones and gravel, lumbar pains, uric acid buildup and joint pain and rheumatic problems. Four to six drops of the oil taken with honey three or four times a day has been a successful home supportive for these ailments. It is anti-inflammatory for joint pain and being a useful carminative for indigestion and flatulence. It was traditionally the primary flavoring in gin.

Dosage: Steep one teaspoon in a cup of boiling water for twenty minutes, covered, take one cup three times daily; of the liquid extract, take 10-30 drops three times daily.

Juniper
Juniperis communis
(Bastard Killer)

Medicinal Usage

Pliny said that the juniper, "even above all other supportives, is warming and alleviates symptoms." Roman physicians recommended it for pains in the stomach, chest and side, flatulence, coughs and colds, and disorders of the uterus. Some even suggested smearing the body with an extract from the seeds as a protection against snake bites. Culpeper recommended the berries for a great variety of health concerns, ranging from an antidote against poisons and a defence against the plague, to strengthening the brain and supporting "wind from any part of the body." Its country name 'bastard killer' arose from the eating of the berries to procure an abortion. Juniper berries should not be taken during pregnancy, or by those with kidney problems.

Culinary Usage

Oil of juniper, made from the sharp-tasting berries, was used to flavour liqueurs, notably gin, and added to marinades, stews, sauces, and certain meat dishes. The wood was burned to smoke preserved meats.

Miscellaneous

A native of Britain, appearing soon after the last Ice Age, juniper is one of the country's slowest-growing trees. In Biblical times the branches were burned as a purifying herb in temples. During more recent times in Britain, because the dry wood burns with very little smoke, it was favoured by those involved in the illicit distifiing of spirits. The word 'gin' is derived from the Dutch geneva (jenever), meaning 'juniper'. In many areas of the country it was considered a powerful protection against witches, devils and evil spirits. Branches of juniper were strewn on floors to sweeten the smell of rooms, and burned to cleanse the air of impurities, especially during epidemics. The berries yield a brown dye.

The fruits of the Juniper are a stimulant, tonic, diuretic, stomachic and diaphoretic; they help digestion, dissipate flatulence, increase the appetite, induce sweating and increase mucous secretion. It has been especially used in catarrhal affections and problems with the bladder and the lungs.

Macerated in wine they can be used to help support autumnal intermittent fevers; they have often been mixed with Wormwood (from which absinth is obtained), and other bitter and helping to stimulate plants.

In fumigations, alone or mixed with other aromatic plants, Juniper berries have been used in cases of aphony, laryngitis and pharyngitis, pulmonary catarrh and asthma. Their decoction has been applied externally as a tonic and resolvent in a great many health concerns.

If you like gin, you like juniper. Juniper berries flavor gin. The cone-like berries are blue or red and grow on aromatic evergreen shrubs and trees closely related to cedar. Oil from the berries can be used for flavoring, and for health.

Potential Health Benefits

Commission E endorses juniper berries for helping support dyspepsia; that is, they settle the stomach. Juniper also helps restore flagging appetite. Because of its flushing, diuretic action, juniper can be used to help support kidney and bladder stones.

Scientific Evidence

Juniper berries are steamed to produce volatile oil, which comprises about 1 percent of the dried herb. The oil contains terpineol 4-01, which gives juniper its diuretic power. Berries also contain tannins, sugars, flavonoid glycosides, and resin- and wax-containing compounds.

Although it has long been favored in European traditional health, controlled scientific studies aren't plentiful. herbal authority Varro E. Tyler, Ph.D., concludes that "additional research on this ancient herbal supportive is certainly warranted."

How to Use the Herb

The daily dose is up to 10 grams of the dried berries, corresponding to 20-100 milligrams of the essential oil. Whole, crushed, or powdered herb can be used as an infusion, decoction or a liquid extract.

Juniper Berry Fruits are traditionally used as diuretic and as urinary antiseptic (in case of pyeletis and bladder concerns), but also as stomachic, carminative and for dyspepsia. Juniper berries are best known for their use in flavouring gin (from genever, the Dutch word for juniper). External applications of the essential oils lead to skin irritation..

Juniper
Juniperus communis L.

Family: Cupressaceae.

Other Names: Geniévrier (French); Gewöhnlicher Wacholder (German); ginepro (Italian); enebro común (Spanish).

Description: A shrub or small tree, usually up to 5 m in height, with densely crowded needle-like leaves, inconspicuous male and female flowers on separate plants, and small, spherical, blue to black, fleshy, berry-like cones.

Origin: North temperate region (Europe, Asia and North America); protected in parts of central Europe but berries are wild-harvested in several countries.

Parts Used: Ripe, fresh or dried female cones, commonly referred to as berries (Juniperi fructus) and rarely also dried wood chips.

Therapeutic Category: Diuretic, antiseptic, antirheumatic.

Active Ingredients: The essential oil (up to 2% contains mainly alpha- and beta-pinene (80%), sabinene, limonene, terpinen-4-ol, borneol and geraniol, together with sesquiterpenes (including alpha- and beta-cadinene). Furthermore, phenolics (3-4%) with flavonoids, catechol tannins and proanthocyanidins are present in the fruits. The wood contains unusual diterpenes, such as communis acid, sugiol and xanthoperol, and sesquiterpenes, lignans (such as the cytotoxic podophyllotoxin).

Health Effects: Terpinen-4-ol is considered to be the main diuretic compound and is known to be non-irritant. Because of other compounds however, the essential oil is not considered to be a safe diuretic, because it works through irritation of the kidney and may cause hematuria. The phenolic compounds are potentially active as antioxidants and may contribute to some extent to the health value of juniper berry.

Status: Traditional health; Pharm.; Comm. E+; ESCOP 3.

Preparation and Dosage: An infusion is made with 0.5 g freshly crushed berries in 150 mL water. Dry extracts of the wood are included in various diuretic and urological teas and preparations. The essential oil from the fruit is sometimes used, or juniper spirit, which is a mixture of 0.5 g juniper oil in 100 g ethanol-water (2:1), containing 0.1% camphor.

Uva ursi, or bearberry, can be used to help support kidney health including kidney inflammation (acute or chronic nephritis). Uva ursi strengthens and imparts tone to the urinary passages.

Corn silk is an herb that is very soothing to the urinary tract and provides gentle cleansing and purifying actions while increasing urine flow and helping to restore balance to the kidneys.

Both goldenseal and burdock root are effective at removing toxins from the kidneys and boosting immunity, two aspects that are essential for attaining proper kidney function.

We've also added juniper berry and stinging nettle which aid in kidney function and offer mild diuretic properties.
