• Balances adrenal and other glandular functioning

BORAGE (Borago officinalis) is a garden herb native to Europe and North Africa. Its name is derived from the Arabic abu rashsh - father of sweat, because it was used in antiquity as a sudoriforic. In medieval times, borage leaves were a popular salad green, and wine spiked with borage was considered a supportive for melancholy.

The sweetish and mildly acrid flavored borage has often been prescribed for fevers, lung congestion, heart problems, and increasing mothers milk. It exhibits actions that are refrigerant, febrifuge, aperient, galactagogue, and pectoral. The biochemistry of this herb is the subject of some controversy where safety is concerned.

The herb contains active compounds such as pyrrolizidine alkaloid, including an intermedine, and their acetyl derivatives with amabiline and supinin, and choline. This group of alkaloids, and certain plants (some species of spring-harvested comfrey, groundsel and senecio species, coltsfoot) that contain them, are currently suspected as possible causes of liver toxicity and immunity issues.

Though used by traditional people around the world for thousands of years, borage is not the type of nutritive tonic herb that one would want to take regularly over a period of months. Rather, it is more of an occasional acute supportive for fevers and might be considered safe to use as a sole agent for no more than three to seven days maximum. Other ingredients include mucilage, tannin, traces of essential oil.

Borage can be used to help support heart and lung congestion, fevers and to help promote mother's milk. Its demulcent properties make it effective against irritations both internal and external. The seeds, like evening primrose, have been found to be a rich source of gamma linolenic oil.

Pronounced to rhyme with "porridge," borage is also known as burrage. Borage grows wild in the Mediterranean countries. It once had a reputation for dispelling melancholy and giving courage, so the ancient Greeks combined it with their wine. It is also believed to have some calming effects helpful for support of nervous complaints, and the leaves are said to stimulate lactation in nursing mothers. Borage is thought good for reducing fever and restoring vitality during recovery from illness. Because it enhances perspiration, it is also credited with some antidotal effect against poisons. Astrologers place borage in Jupiter's realm and under the zodiac sign of Leo, the lion.

Plant Facts and Growing Tips

Plant: Annual. Borage is a spreading, branched plant covered with sharp, whitish bristles. The large leaves (up to 12 inches long) are oval or oblong. Blue flowers with dark anthers nod in leaf clusters at the tips of the stem. Borage is ideal planted in borders and in containers where its lovely flowers can be seen close up.

Height: 1 to 3 feet.

Soil: Dry somewhat poor.

Exposure: Sun or filtered shade.

Propagation: By seeds planted in spring during the first or second lunar phase. They germinate quickly. Borage self-seeds easily, and in mild climates can become a pest.

Care: The plants take up a lot of room. Because they have a taproot, they don't transplant well. They should be placed at least 1 foot apart or thinned. Planting them near tomatoes is said to act as a disinfectant.

Parts Used for Tea: Leaves, flowers.

Taste: Pleasant, cucumber-like. Some say it's cooling, others that it's spicy hot. Try it and judge for yourself.

How to Brew

By Infusion: 1 teaspoon dried leaves and/or flowers or, preferably, 3 teaspoons fresh herb gathered in the morning just after the dew is off the plants, when the oils are strongest. Crush the fresh herb with a clean cloth to help release aromatic oils. Add 1 cup boiling water and steep to taste.

Borage Leaf is used to balance adrenal and other glandular functioning. It is anti-inflammatory, help stimulates milk production in new mothers and supports cardiovascular function, healthy skin and nails. Borage leaf can be used to help support joint pain, irritated skin, psoriasis, coronary dysfunction, high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol. This herb is rich in Omega-6 essential fatty acids (especially gamma-linolenic acid), contains calcium, potassium, palmitic acid and tannins.

General Herb Information

Borage
Borago officinalis L.

Family: Boraginaceae.

Other Names: Bourrache (French); Boretsch (German); boragine (Italian); borraja (Spanish).

Description: Borage is a robust annual herb of about 0.5 m in height with large hairy leaves and attractive blue flowers.

Origin: Southern Europe and the Mediterranean region; cultivated worldwide as a culinary herb.

Parts Used: Flowers (Boraginis flos), flowering tops (Boraginis herba) or the seed oil.

Therapeutic Category: General tonic, anti-irritant.

Uses and Properties: Borage flowers or borage herb are traditionally used as diuretic, diaphoretic, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and emulcent, and also as mild sedative and anti-depressant. The seed oil is known commercially as "starflower oil"; it is similar to evening primrose oil.

Active Ingredients: Borage contains mucilages (about 11%) and trace amounts (0.004%) of several unsaturated pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) (including amabiine, supinidine, lycopsamine, and intermedine). The seed oil contains high levels of unsaturated y-linolenic acid (abbreviated as GLA), an essential fatty acid. The oil contains about 21% GLA (compared to the 9% in evening primrose oil; see Oenothera biennis) , together with linoleic acid (30-40%) and oleic acid (about 15 %). The oil appears to be alkaloid free.

Health Effects: Unsaturated dietary fatty acids have been shown to influence stress reactivity and performance. In a trial of 10 individuals, a dose of 1.3 g of seed oil (taken daily for 28 days) increased cardiovascular reactivity. GLA can be used to help support skin irritations and neurodermitis. The soothing properties can be ascribed to the mucilage content. PAs alkylate DNA and are considered to be hepatotoxic and carcinogenic.

Notes: Another member of the family Boraginaceae is Cynoglossum officinale (hound's tongue), which contains PAs and allantoin. It is traditionally used in much the same way as comfrey.

Status: Traditional health; Pharm.

(Star Flower)

Medicinal Usage

For the three periods of vegetation of Borage, in which the plant changes composition, there are three clear properties, i. e., it is first emollient and demulcent, later depurative and sudorific and finally diuretic. Because of the nitre it contains.

Borage can be used to help support symptoms of ailments requiring the use of depuratives and sudorifics, for example, various skin problems. It has been prescribed in eruptive fevers and phiegmasia. The Ancients assigned it stimulant properties that are no longer recognized today.

Internally, borage was utilised to help support fevers, dry skin complaints and bronchial infections. The oil was prescribed for kidney, bladder and bowel complaints, joint pain, and nervous disorders. Externally, the herb was used in a poultice to soothe inflammation and bruises; and, in a lotion, for bathing sore eyes. Gerard recommended syrup from the flowers to "comforteth the heart, purgeth melancholy, and quieteth the frenetic or lunatic person."

Culinary Usage

The young leaves of borage were cooked like spinach or added raw to salads. They also added a cucumber-like flavour to wine and cold drinks.

Miscellaneous

Valued in ancient times for its ability to dispel melancholy and impart courage, borage flowers were included in stirrup cups offered to Crusaders departing for the Holy Land. Modern research suggests that chemicals in the herb act upon the adrenal gland, the "organ of courage". Gerard quoted the old Latin verse: "I Borage bring always courage." As a native of the Mediterranean, the plant was known to Greek and Roman botanists. Pliny said that it "makes men merry and joyful."

Medicinal Usage

Medicinal uses are somewhat limited. Borage is diuretic, demulcent, emollient, and diaphoretic. It is used in kidney ailments, pulmonary troubles, and for fevers. A poltice of the fresh leaves with the hairs scraped off can be used to help support inflammatory swellings. A handful of fresh leaves steeped in a quart of water with a sprig or two of spearmint added makes a cooling, soothing summer beverage. Borage contains mucilages, calcium, and potassium nitrate.

General Herb Information

The genus Borago is represented by three species native to the Mediterranean region. Borago officinalis is the familiar species of the herb garden. This coarse annual usually grows to 1 1/2 to 2 feet tall, though in a rich soil it may exceed five feet in height. The leaves are thick, covered with stiff rough hairs, alternate, oval-shaped, and pointed at the ends. They grow from three to six inches long. The stems are succulent, hollow, and hairy like the leaves. The terminal flowers are star-shaped, bright blue, and distinguished by prominent black anthers forming a cone-like structure in the center of each blossom. The flower clusters nod downward. Each flower produces four brownish-black nutlets.

Borage grows well in an average garden soil and will tolerate poor dry soils. Soil pH should fall between 5 and 8. Full sun or partial shade are suitable. It grows readily from seed and self-sows profusely. Plant on a back border or central focal point. Borage sprawls and should be given two-foot spacings. The seeds produce broad large cotyledons similar in appearance to those of cucumbers. Borage develops a tap root making it difficult to transplant. Plants take about eight weeks to mature. They will continue blooming until the first frost when they wither to a black mass. One ounce of seeds will plant about a 500-foot row.

Harvest borage as it begins to flower. It can be harvested two or three times during the growing season, or you can make a couple of successive plantings. Drying must be done with care. If you are drying small amounts, carefully remove the leaves from the succulent stems, and if time allows, peel the stems for a noon salad. Fast drying under moderate heat is preferable. Borage tends to turn brown or black without good air circulation. If you spread it to dry on an open frame drying rack, make sure the leaves are not overlapping, potentially hampering air flow.

The fresh leaves and flowers of borage possess a delicate cucumber-like flavor. Young leaves are good chopped in salads. The leaves may also be boiled as a pot herb. The flowers are a colorful and tasty addition to salads. Gently grasp the flower stem directly behind the sepals, then pinch and pull the anthers, and the entire corolla will slip from its pedestal.

Preparation and Dosage: About 2 g of dried herb in a cup of boiling water is taken three times a day.

Name

Borago officinalis L. (Boraginceae), commonly called borage, bugloss, and burrage. In French, it is Bourrache officinale; in German, Boretsch Gurkenkraut.

Source

This family of plants came from the Mediterranean region, but borage has been cultivated in European herb gardens for many hundreds of years. Plants are said to have an odor like cucumbers, and probably for that reason, chopped leaves are sometimes added to salads. Oils extracted from borage, and oil extracted from evening primrose, black currant, and gooseberry (Ribes uva crispa) contain some of the same fatty acids found in fish oils.

History

One of the traditional uses of the herb had been to promote sweating. The name "borage" is said to derive from the arabic word abu rach, meaning "father of all sweat." The Greeks and Romans believed that borage could support feelings of melancholy, but since they prepared their borage by soaking it in alcohol, it is hard to say whether it was the borage or the alcohol that improved their spirits. Traditional herbalists use borage as a diuretic. Until recently, claimed medical benefits were not taken very seriously. However, the oil extracted from the seeds, (which were never used by traditionalists) may yet turn out to be a useful food supplement.

Traditional Support Uses

Borage can be used as a demulcent, diuretic, and stimulant.

Commission E Recommendations

Borage is not approved by Commission E, and the German government no longer permits its sale.

Possible Effects

No molecule with diuretic properties has ever been isolated from borage nor, for that matter, is there any reason to suppose borage causes sweating. But the seeds do contain large amounts (25 percent or more) of a fatty acid called gammalinolenic acid (GLA). This same product is found in fish oil and in evening primrose, the fruits of black currants, and in gooseberry. GLA plays a key role in human metabolism. Humans make GLA from another fatty acid called linoleic acid (LA), and in turn use GLA to produce components of the skin, blood cells, and a family of compounds involved in the inflammatory process (prostoglandins and leucotrienes) and in blood clotting.

Even though the body converts LA to GLA, just adding supplemental LA to the diet does not lead to increased levels of GLA in the body, and does absolutely nothing to increase levels of the important compounds made from GLA. But when GLA is added to the diet, levels of hormones made from GLA do increase. Based on these observations, GLA has been added to the diet of severely injured animals. Compared to animals that did not receive GLA, medicated animals had higher levels of anti-inflammatory hormones and a higher rate of survival. Addition of GLA to the diet, but not LA, also fighted the activation of T lymphocytes, the type of white blood cells that is thought to be responsible for much of the pain and swelling in people with joint pain These effects are under active investigation at several major surgical centers.

Even more exciting are studies on using GLA to alter stress responses. It has been known for quite some time that exaggerated and inappropriate responses to stressful situations play a role in causing heart health issues and high blood pressure. The traditional ways of fighting stress - exercise, relaxation and stress management training - do not always work. But, in one clinical study, men who were supported with borage oil responded better to experimental stress (their hearts did not beat as rapidly and their blood pressure did not go as high) as men supported with fish oil, olive oil, or controls (study participants who were given a placebo). The results suggest that GLA does something to counter the effects of stress hormones.

On the minus side, borage also contains very small amounts of a potentially dangerous alkaloid called pyrrolizidine. Much larger amounts of this same compound are to be found in the herb commonly known as comfrey (Symphytum officinale). Based on animal studies, it seems that pyrrolizidine itself is not toxic, but that once it gets into the body, the liver converts pyrrolizidine into compounds that may damage the lungs (primary pulmonary hypertension) and damage DNA. Damage to DNA translates into an increased risk for immunity health problems.

Except for the oil extracted from the seeds, no one seriously claims any health benefits for borage. But the GLA content of the oil is much higher than that of the evening primrose, and a number of complaints have been successfully cared for with the latter. These include skin irritations, joint pain and premenstrual tension.

  Borage leaf tea

Good service from this company. This is the first time I've tried borage leaf tea, which I've seen recommended for adrenal support. Yesterday I took the tea bags to work and simply poured cold (room temp) water onto one bag all day long to sip borage tea all day. I make tea that way all the time when I'm in a situation where there's no way to heat the water. Just let them sit a little longer.
